You'll see a large central die on both chips, called the IO die, which contains an integrated graphics processor (IGP), the PCI Express controller, and other important components. Underneath the integrated heat spreader (IHS), the Ryzen 9 7950X and Ryzen 9 7950X3D are very similar. Instead of going over the Zen 4 nuances again (hit the review for more detail if desired), let’s focus on what’s unique with the Ryzen 9 7950X3D. Design: 'Zen 4,' Cached OutĪMD designed the Ryzen 9 7950X3D based on its Zen 4 microarchitecture, which I went over in greater detail in my review of the Ryzen 9 7950X, linked above. The 7950X3D is an excellent CPU taken in isolation, but its starting MSRP of $699 leaves it overshadowed by AMD’s own Ryzen 9 7950X and Intel's Core i9-13900K except in edge cases. AMD touts the Ryzen 9 7950X3D as a superior gaming processor, and it does show some modest frame-rate advantages at lower resolutions in some games, but it's no slam-dunk across all titles. Of course, the big application for the 3D V-Cache chips is gaming. Though the increase in cache size can be beneficial, it doesn’t help with all kinds of computing tasks, and it does come with some drawbacks. With the Ryzen 9 7950X3D, AMD's first "Zen 4"-architecture processor to feature its 3D V-Cache technology, this effort has been successful only in some situations. By substantially increasing the amount of cache on some of its processors, AMD hopes to gain a large enough performance boost to outpace the competition. Memory cache is an essential piece of any modern-day processor.
